About this listen

Dark and twisted family roots threaten to strangle their home's foundations in this chilling haunted house novel from the award-winning master of modern horror, T. Kingfisher.

In this ordinary North Carolina suburb, family secrets are always in bloom.

Samantha Montgomery pulls into the driveway of her family home to find a massive black vulture perched on the mailbox, staring at the house.

Inside, everything has changed. Gone is the eclectic warmth Sam expects; instead the walls are a sterile white. Now, it's very important to say grace before dinner, and her mother won't hear a word against Sam's long-dead and little-missed grandmother, who was the first to put down roots in this small Southern town.

The longer Sam stays, the stranger things get. And every day, more vultures circle overhead…

And interesting story mediocre telling

The concept is nothing new so it is all in the telling. The characters are mostly well rounded and I enjoy spending time with them, but the self deprecating ‘yay me’ humour of the main character and narrator gets tiresome quickly. Overall there is little to no dread or fear in the story, so the finale just happens and then ends. This is my first T Kingfisher, and I will try at least one more their books and hope it delivers a bit more.

it was ok

3.5 stars. This is my first book by T. Kingfisher and I enjoyed it. I think I may have enjoyed it more though in physical form.

There was definitely the premise for it to be suspenseful and tense but I didn't really get that from the narration, so that has a bit of an effect on my star rating but I still enjoyed the story and will most likely read more from this author.

always a pleasure

Listening to T.Kingfisher story is like a nice afternoon stroll in the summer down a familiar country lane. Except with cool monsters and horror.

Wonderful narration and great read for anyone who enjoyed Kingfisher’s other adult horror

Fun narrator, fabulous main character, read if you liked The Hollow Places or The Twisted Ones. Spooky and twisted but not gory. No animal death (except some ladybirds). I always have an excellent time with this author’s work.

Cosy Horror

If you want bone chilling terror from page one this probably isn’t for you. But if you want something comforting and amusing with a really likeable main character, all combined with genuinely creepy imagery and a building horror then this is perfect. I thoroughly enjoyed it and thought the narrator was excellent.

Fun and bizarre

Really enjoyed this. Thought it was well narrated and the characters likeable. As usual the authors humour throughout is brilliant.

The best T Kingfisher story yet?

Brilliant. A really slow build, dawning horror, utterly creepy story. Fantastically likeable, funny, wise, daft protagonist, and great narration

Loved the characters

I enjouthe story and I really liked the characters. it wasn't a very spooky book. But a bit like.. wholesome horror? I'm not entirely sure what you'd call it, but I liked it.
