About this listen

Set adrift on the tides of fate by the deaths of her parents and left wanting answers, Laura Callaway now lives with her uncle and his disapproving wife in North Cornwall. There she feels like a castaway, always viewed as an outsider even as she yearns to belong.

While wreckers search for valuables along the windswept Cornwall coast - known for its many shipwrecks but few survivors - Laura searches for clues to the lives lost so she can write letters to next of kin and return keepsakes to rightful owners. When a man is washed ashore after a wreck, Laura acts quickly to protect him from a local smuggler determined to destroy him.

As Laura and a neighbor care for the survivor, they discover he has curious wounds and, although he speaks in careful, educated English, his accent seems odd. Other clues wash ashore, and Laura soon realizes he is not who he seems to be. Despite the evidence against him, the mysterious man might provide her only chance to discover the truth about her parents' fate. With danger pursuing them from every side, and an unexpected attraction growing between them, will Laura ever find the answers she seeks?

Unusual plot, involving smuggling in 18th century Cornwall

Beautiful story, and the narration was superb. I feel like I learned something listening to this book!

A very enjoyable listen

A good story with well rounded characters and well researched. The descriptions of life in Cornwall, the treatment of the French POW'S & the spy ring on Jersey was interesting & added depth. Much enjoyed.

A beautiful and comforting story

This book is very dear to me. This was my second time ‘reading’ it (or this time I should say listening to it), and it was just as pleasant if not more than the first time. I love this story so much and the writing is excellent in my opinion. The only somewhat negative thing I can say is that I didn’t love how Alexander was voiced, but it didn’t bother me so much that I couldn’t get through the book.

Enjoyable, easy listening

Really enjoyed the descriptions of the Cornish & Jersey coastlines, together with the French countryside (although I felt after so much depth elsewhere, the French chapters felt light in comparison. I suppose I just wanted more, in a greedy way.)

This narrator is fabulous, really appreciate a well read book. Thank you.

Very interesting story

I love the settings and the rich descriptions of the areas and the cultures and the characters. I found some of the language to be a little bit heady. But overall, I like this author

Good plot

The mawkish ending and religious references, thoughts and conversations spoil what is an otherwise enjoyable listen.
Having lived in Devon for some years, I enjoyed the historic events incorporated into the story.
Excellent narration.

Brilliant setting and plot

A beautiful clean romance with rich descriptions of the Cornwall area and it's traditions. I loved the little extractions at the beginning of each chapter. The plot was engaging enough without focusing too much on the history and strategies of the war, which is how I like it. I highly recommend this book.

Historical romance

I enjoyed this story tremendously, it offered so much history of Cornwall and the war going on in France and between France and England. There was plenty of plots and tension to keep my interest with lots of romance, excellent!!!
