I still miss the characters...

I finished this book two days ago and I really miss the characters. They are so vividly portrayed. The narration was AMAZING. And how do I even describe the plot? Relevant, heartwarming, gripping, and infuriating -- and so much more. I recommend this book for ALL people 15 years and up. This book should be required reading for high schoolers doing Modern Studies or civics. Thank you, Angie Thomas, for this masterpiece!

my favourite book!

this is my favourite book ever! ( i also love the film) the way it’s written is amazing. it’s emotional, it’s relevant, it’s engaging, it’s powerful.it has such a great insight to the struggles of modern day racism and i think everyone should read it at least once in their lifetime. i’m definitely going to be buying paper copy.

An exceptional reading of a brilliant book

Really loved both the narration and the story of this book. Really made it feel like you are 'there' despite it being a very different life to my own (location and race). Have recommended to all my family and friends.

Fantastic in every way

Excellent story, absolutely brilliantly narrated. Highly recommended.

I didn't know what to expect when I bought this. I'd seen it recommended and wanted to make a conscious decision to support black authors in the midst of the Black Lives Matter movement being at the forefront of our lives. I didn't realise this book was going to be so relevant and very much enjoyed that it was.

This book was such a rollercoaster of emotions, I cried, I laughed; I felt Starr's emotions throughout. More than that, this is one of the best written families I've read, the relationships between them were beautiful and real.

The narration was absolutely top class; I actually forgot it was just one person because the characters came alive so well, and so clearly.

Maybe it's because I'm an author myself and understand the importance of reviews, but I couldn't wait to review this; before I'd even finished it.

I loved it. I can't wait to read more from this author, and hear more from this narrator. Fantastic

THUG LIFE- The hate u give little infants

The message behinds this story is one that speaks of recently events surrounding the black community. Although set out in America easily relatable to the UK.

Great book, good message.

Narrator did a fantastic job, really brought the character to life.

Amazing, emotive, beautiful

This book is stunning. My rule for 5 stars is that the book has to move my emotions in some way, and I almost ended up ugly crying on the London Overground, so I'm throwing those 5 stars at this thing.

Starr is a 16 year old black girl who is torn between her rough home neighbourhood with it's colourful community, and the comfortable privilege of the private school her parents send her to. Starr, her school life, home life, family and friends are thrown into turmoil when her friend is shot three times by a nervous cop. He was unarmed.

Yet I'm STILL seeing white people in the reviews trying to question it. Like, Angie Thomas makes the situation as PLAIN AS DAY and the only 'yeah buts' you see are coming from racists.

Anyway... back to the book.

The characters in this book are deliciously rich. I mean this too - all the personalities had me craving this book and this led to me lying on my bed for 3 hours one evening so I could finish the audiobook - which I'd highly recommend. Loved the accents so much. What an incredible audiobook performance!

A lot of reviews make out like this book is 'racist against white people' (not a thing) but I actually thought this was beautifully done. Chris is the white person in the book that is most of us: well-meaning, kind, loves the black people in their life, but hasn't had to be aware of what black people face. Once he catches wind though, he really wants to help, he really wants to be there for his girlfriend.

And Starr and her family - of course they're going to be prejudiced against white people after what they go through (still not racism). Starr is all too aware her friend was shot dead in front of her eyes because of his skin colour. She's allowed PTSD about white people for it. And she gets past it in her own way. Like I said, handled beautifully.

The whole time I was equal parts eager for her to confide in her friends and boyfriend but equally scared for her. Rich white people? Not the most tolerant... And gosh if I didn't LOVE hating Hailey.

I honestly didn't think I'd ever be able to enjoy a book about American high schoolers again, after recent awful reads. I was super wrong.

This book is about racism, love, family, community, defiance, bravery and reality.

LOVED it.

Really damn moving, really damn relevant

I had to read/ listen to this book for an English class over the holidays as we are going to do an in depth analysis of the story. Throughout the book, I was laughing, angered, and moved.
The book is extremely relevant for this day and age and didn’t have to usual ‘happy ending’ but it leaves off on a satisfying and hopeful note. I would recommend this book to anyone though they may get a bit annoyed with the conflicts XD.
Brilliant book and brilliantly read.
