About this listen

We all keep secrets. Even from ourselves.

YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN THE MAIDENS.

The Maidens are Cambridge University's most exclusive society, whose members are selected by the charismatic professor of Greek tragedy, Edward Fosca.

A SECRETIVE SET OF THE BRIGHTEST, MOST CAPTIVATING STUDENTS.

When one of the Maidens is murdered, grieving young therapist Mariana Andros is drawn back to the idyllic campus where she was once herself a student.

THE GROUP FROM WHICH EACH VICTIM WILL BE CHOSEN.

Because beneath the university's ancient traditions and beauty is a web of secrets, jealousy and lies. And when the killer threatens the person she loves most, Mariana will give anything to stop them - even her own life...

From the #1 global bestselling author of The Silent Patient comes a spellbinding tale of psychological suspense, weaving together Greek mythology, murder, and obsession...

Intriguing story, but one hell of a gut punch end

The story was actually really compelling, with a grieving main character. Her niece seems off from the very start but you can't quite work out in what way. The investigation is good but the 'red herring' was just very annoying and predictable. Main issue is the gut punch end that left a horrible feeling in my stomach for days after.

Loved it

I loved this book, I loved that it intertwined with his previous work. It was intelligent and gripping until the end.

Underwhelming

The story is confusing and in the end an anti climax. Not as good as his previous novels

Fabulous

This is a great page turning book. Lots of red herrings and a brilliant twist at the end I genuinely did not see coming.
Highly recommend

Cleverly crafted but contrived

Really difficult to buy into the likelihood of this well crafted plot. The voice of Louise Brealey conjured up a rather dull woman although the American accent she gave the main male protagonist was good. The book did have me guessing but not caring much.

Gets carried away

Starts off great and a lot of effort is put into the character development and emotions.

However, like a great deal of my recent books, it seems to lose confidence and feels the need to pile in ridiculous storylines that takeaway the reality. So the story ends up like an episode of Midsomer Murders. Disappointing.

Great story

Thoroughly enjoyed this and, without spoiling anything, I like the way it references another story - and it makes no difference whether you read that or not. I liked the narration too.
