Summary

When Nigel Baxter, a middle-aged married banker with an unremarkable past, is found dead in the bath of a plush hotel suite, his wrists slit, it looks as if he's taken his own life. At first. But when Detective Inspector Daniel Riley is assigned to the case, he soon realises all isn't as it first appears to be. When a postmortem shows Baxter was poisoned, Riley suspects foul play. And then there's the odd addition of a teddy bear left at the crime scene....

Struggling to come to terms with the loss of his fiancée, Rachel, in a freak motorcycle accident and the baby she was carrying inside her, Riley throws himself into the case in a bid to distract himself from his grief. And his infamous intuition is telling him something is off, really off on this one. With the help of his dedicated team, Riley begins to delve into Baxter's life and soon realises that the amenable family man has been indulging in the 'services' of some dubious websites, ones where young women hook up with older men in return for 'favours', and there's one woman in particular he'd like to speak to. A woman calling herself Goldilocks....

Great listen

Loved it. Loved Dan Riley, loved Florence/Rachel/Dani-Jo, loved Bayliss & Harding, Davies, Woods, the whole cast. The story is excellently written and moves at break neck speed. However, I had to remove a star for unwanted sex. There was just too much information that I really didn't need to hear! But, apart from that, a great listen that I recommend.

Great plot

Really enjoyed this, not my usual choice of book but I couldn't put it down. I was nearly put off this book after reading the reviews as some people thought that the main character sounded creepy thinking about his dead girlfriend throughout it. I personally thought this was a natural thing for any grieving person to do.

Gripping

A very good story I got into it straight away. I wish they had 2 narrators. I think he was good but the women’s voices were not realistic.

Good read

I like crime thrillers and get bored very easily. I also have a tendency to predict endings quite early on so I find some ‘thrillers’ very dull.
To me, this book was a good crime novel. The story was progressive, and I was into it from the first chapter. I loved the story and thought the ending was good. I wouldn’t say it was incredibly thrilling but still really enjoyable.
I would definitely recommend this book.

Gripping read!

A thrilling, rollercoaster ride of emotions, skilfully written in such a way it enables the listener to empathise with every character, however flawed. The plot gathers pace quickly and had me hooked all the way. I shall look out with interest for Anna-Lou Weatherley's next Dan Riley book and hope it is narrated by James Lailey as he does such a brilliant job of bringing the troubled detective to life.
