Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

This Penguin Classic is performed by Paterson Joseph, known for his roles in the forthcoming BBC adaption of Malorie Blackman's Noughts and Crosses, Peep Show, and Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere. This definitive recording includes an Introduction by Richard Pevear.

Young D'Artagnan arrives in Paris to join the King's elite guards, but almost immediately finds he is duelling with some of the very men he has come to swear allegiance to - Porthos, Athos and Aramis, inseparable friends: the Three Musketeers. Soon part of their close band, D'Artagnan's loyalty to his new allies puts him in the deadly path of Cardinal Richlieu's machinations. And when the young hero falls in love with the beautiful but inaccessible Constance, he finds himself in a world of murder, conspiracy and lies, with only the Musketeers to depend on. A stirring nineteenth-century tale of friendship and adventure, The Three Musketeers continues to be one of the most influential and popular pieces of French literature.

Richard Pevear's introduction investigates the controversy of Dumas' literary collaborators, and how important serialisation was to the book's success.

Excellent story superbly narrated

Familiar as I was with the film with Oliver Reed et al I went into this story full of enjoyable anticipation. I was not disappointed. The story however has a much greater and less light hearted depth than the film portrays, I have not read Dumas before and it was a humbling discovery realising the fine literary skill of this author. This is a great adventure story set against the backdrop of 17th century France. It is superbly brought to life by the talented performance of the narrator Paterson Joseph.

Good reading of an engaging adventure

I started with a different reading but was not enjoying it so returned it after sampling this one.
I was surprised how much I enjoyed this story. it was a recommendation from a stranger who had named their dog porthos. Don't be put off by its length every chapter is entertaining.

A deservedly great classic.

A fantastic tale narrated in an exuberant and entertaining fashion.
I started listening to another version of this book, but the narrator was so leaden I had to return the book
Thankfully I found this version. This narrator makes the story sing. Excellent and 100% recommended.

Three Musketeers

Wonderful book. Finally, at 63, read through this lively audible and a used book from World of Books.

Painful narration

We ended up having to abandon this version of the book because we couldn't bear the narration. It is delivered at an enormous speed in a very excitable manner - we actually found it quite stressful. Another reviewer described it as being read in the style of Blackadder - that is most accurate!
