Woody Starkweather loves words—spoken, written, acted, or sung. He grew up on the Connecticut shore, middle-class in a conclave of wealth. He was lifted from this socially discordant setting to another similar one by a scholarship to a prestigious prep school. In college, he majored in writing, but later, working for a publisher, he edited a book on speech pathology, which ignited a passion for helping those who struggle with words. He changed professions and went on to become an internationally recognized expert on stuttering. His 30 years of clinical experience and research are published in 50 articles and nine books. One of those books, Stuttering, co-authored with his wife Janet Givens, made Choice Magazine's 1996 list of Best Academic Books. Leaving academia in 2000, he and his wife spent two years with the Peace Corps in Kazakhstan, where he published a book of short stories and wrote a young adult novel and a trio of international espionage thrillers. He now lives in Vermont, where he’s written and directed six plays and a series of light-hearted articles on language—"Woody on Words." He still follows his passion by teaching online courses in phonetics and communication disorders. He also sings classical and sacred music.
