I am a former TV News Director and manager who worked for more than thirty years in medium and small markets all across the country. I am someone who has managed newsrooms which have won numerous awards and have led and mentored hundreds of journalists. My success in doing that I believe is evidenced by their award-winning work, including Emmys, 'Best Newscast' honors, and individual awards. I even managed a newsroom which remains the smallest market newsroom ever to win a Polk Award for investigative journalism. But like many, I am dismayed by the direction journalism has taken in America. It seems as if we have moved from a system of high standards meant to inform you to one of low standards which often distort information in order to persuade you towards a bias or point of view. As a result studies show trust in the news media has never been lower in our lifetimes, and yet I would argue trust is the most important asset any newsroom or journalist can have.
