When I was growing up. I found myself adopted into the family business. I didn't need any special skills or a fancy resume to attain employment. I simply needed to show up and work. My skillset was a laborer for a construction company upon which we would prepare the foundation for homes and buildings for backfill. Before backfill a very critical step was ours to preform. We would seal the concrete with tar for a waterproofing coat. As I progressed at work I would eventually be given more responsibility; such as applying the tar to the wall. This was applied by spray application. It is very similar to applying paint. No mater how good my quality was or how good my spray consistency was. My work was always buried and hidden from the world's eyes forever. I know that tar is not the most glamorous thing to look at even as good as I could make it look. I took great pride in my work and I felt like even my most highly skilled professional jobs would still go unnoticed. Later in life while attending college, I had signed up for a calligraphy class to simply fill an elective. I soon realized how much I enjoyed putting effort into something others would be able to see, and how I could share my talent. Our teacher assigned us a project to create a book out of print. We had the choice to use someone else's written work or poem or to create something of our own. I browsed through the sample calligraphy poems in the teachers book and decided to make a poem of my own. I came up with a book called Boys Will Be Boys. It was Boys are toy planes, trains, and boats. Drawbridges, castles, and moats. Salamanders, lizards and frogs. Books, games, and Lincoln Logs. Etc. I was able to come up with 6 verses and it stretched me farther than anything I had ever done before. My teacher stood me up in front of the whole class to show off my book and even told me that she would buy a personal copy of my book if I ever published it. As I heard what she said, I schemed of how much I enjoyed making the book and how rewarding it was to share what I had created with others. Since that time I have written a novel and other children's books. My ultimate goal and dream is to continue writing full time, and share so much more of the creativity God has blessed me to develop.
