Steve Chilton's fifth book 'Voices from the Hills: pioneering women fell and mountain runners' was published by Sandstone Press in April 2023. His fourth book 'All or nothing at all: the life of Billy Bland' was published by Sandstone Press on 20 August 2020. His third book 'Running Hard: the story of a rivalry' (Sandstone Press) was published on 16 February 2017. His second book 'The Round: in Bob Graham's footsteps' (Sandstone Press) was published on 17 September 2015. Steve's first book 'It's a hill, get over it' (Sandstone Press) won the Bill Rollinson Prize for Landscape and Tradition, was nominated for the Boardman-Tasker Award, and was short-listed for the TGO Outdoor Book of the Year. He is a committed runner and qualified athletics coach with considerable experience of fell running, and a marathon PB of 2-34-53. He is a long-time member of the Fell Runners Association (FRA). In a long running career he has run in many of the classic fell races, as well as mountain marathons and has also completed the Cuillin Traverse. Steve formerly worked at Middlesex University (where he was Lead Academic Developer), and is currently involved in an in-depth project to document the history and value of the 1st Edition 6" maps of the Ordnance Survey. His work has been published extensively, particularly in his roles as Chair of the Society of Cartographers, and Chair of the ICA Commission in Neocartography. He is heavily involved in the OpenStreetMap project (osm.org), having co-authored OpenStreetMap: Using and Enhancing the Free Map of the World.
