Newly married and in my twenties, I left Canada to live in the murder capital of the world, Tegucigalpa, Honduras, to follow God’s calling on my life. Since I was fourteen I believed I was called to be a missionary. By the age of seventeen I went on two mission trips to underdeveloped countries. When I was nineteen I took a year between schools to live in Honduras under a cross-cultural development program. When I returned to Canada, I pursued a degree in Peace & Conflict Studies, but failed to complete it. This failure shaped the lens in which I saw myself: I began to identify as a failure and quitter. After marrying my husband, we decided to live in Honduras. I was elated. For the first time in my life I felt that I was in the right place, doing exactly what God called me to do. However, this would not last forever. We stayed for three years, only to leave unexpectedly due to burn-out and brokenness. Upon returning to Canada, I was left utterly broken and defeated. I gained a substantial amount of weight, isolated myself, and struggled daily with the purpose of living. Created from the destructions of my failures, ACROSS HER HEART arose. The story birthed as a response to make meaning of the trauma I endured by the ministry and the environment I lived in. A failed missionary, I did not know who I was—my identity was wildly misconstrued. As I began to understand who I was in Christ, this changed the way I saw myself and understood the core of who I was. Even though I had known Jesus my whole life, I valued myself in my production. I pray this story equips you in your understanding of who you are in Jesus Christ. I pray the message, the core of this book, will help you to separate your value from your identity.
