I daydreamed through high school, college and one marriage, but then I woke up slightly. It was the sixties and we were going to change the world. I lived in one of the epicenters, San Francisco, and took the first job that was my own choice: gripman (driver) of a San Francisco cable car. I did some wandering and world travel and was almost back to sleep when I met the first teacher I could almost talk to as a human being. He invited me up the coast to his college and I got an MA in history. I did some part time teaching, but I was still mostly daydreaming and had no passion for it. It was years later and a dozen unsatisfying jobs later, teaching and non-teaching, that I was thrown out of my first real teaching job for trying to learn how to really teach, to care about students. It took many years and much un-conditioning from what I had been used to in school to arrive at this new state. I hope this book reflects what I have learned. The students are the main characters, not me. These vignettes have a message like fog that drifts into them and holds on. This message is realizing the seldom respected insights of our young people who I want to see realize some of their dreams and not a nuclear winter. So this is more than a little book. Through the mists of the text floats a much bigger message, the heart of teaching which makes the world what it will be or not be. True education, respect for the students, creates a world of grace. One that yet does not exist.
