“Every challenge holds a blessing. It's my job to find it.” —Rob Ekno He had an award-winning broadcasting career come to a crashing halt after losing his way to drugs and alcohol, becoming homeless, and with no hope. Fortunately, he was able to fight off his demons long enough to begin his journey of sobriety on November 29, 1992, and he recently was blessed to celebrate 30 years of sobriety. Not long after Rob got sober in 1992, he moved from the East Coast to Los Angeles. There he was given the opportunity to restart his broadcasting career when he was hired as a national TV host, which he continued to do for nearly 15 years. In that span, Rob produced and hosted thousands of hours of programming that aired on nine networks across America and globally. Also during that time, Rob spent four seasons as part of the crew on the NBC sitcom Newsradio. He was the only actor outside of the regular cast that had a part on Phil Hartman’s last show. A story of Rob’s relationship with Phil is one of the chapters in his latest book, "Cruising Toward Heaven: Navigating from Rough Seas to Miraculous Adventures." While moving his career along, Rob began to rekindle his relationship with God. However, that took an abrupt turn backwards after a brief yet scary encounter, which led Rob to walk away from God for nearly a decade. Then, following a miraculous occurrence in which he met his future wife, Rob began to experience a continual stream of “coincidental” circumstances, which ultimately led him to an astonishing confidence that a “master architect” was at work in all these improbable synchronicities. With his heart once again refocused on his Higher Power, Rob began producing and hosting a popular spiritually based internet radio show In Your Face. It was heard weekdays for more than three years in nearly 100 countries. Rob also wrote his first book God, Bless America…Before It’s Too Late. He was asked to oversee the Hope Center’s homeless program at the former Crystal Cathedral in Orange, California. His testimony has aired on The 700 Club and Hour of Power, among a host of other media outlets. Rob is a very energetic and inspiring speaker and has been invited to share his life’s journey at live events for nearly three decades. After his marriage ended several years ago, Rob was offered the opportunity to go to Alaska and begin the next chapter in his life. He spent a good portion of the following eight years there, which provided him with numerous incredible experiences. Those included climbing into ice caves under the Mendenhall Glacier, sitting on a kayak in front of 13 brown bears fishing for salmon, walking on multiple glaciers, mushing with sled dogs, ziplining, flying in helicopters and float planes, and enjoying a number of whale watching excursions. Having befriended various wildlife experts, Rob gained vast knowledge of Alaska’s ecosystem. In 2017, he was able to put that wisdom to use when he was hired as the Cruise Host on a private ship traveling throughout southeast Alaska, as well as the Columbia and Snake Rivers in Washington and Oregon. Rob created presentations for the ships’ guests, providing them with an insider’s look at various aspects of their travels, including area wildlife and places of interest. These excursions also provided Rob with a multitude of new experiences while guiding the passengers in exploring off-beaten areas of Alaska, in addition to many sites along the Columbia and Snake Rivers. In October of 2018, however, Rob had an unexpected experience that he was fortunate to survive. He had a devastating fall into an unsecured open hatch on the cruise ship as it was traveling on the Columbia River. Rob’s left leg was severely injured and he lost an enormous amount of blood. Receiving no medical help, he spent the next two hours lying on a bed with a towel and belt wrapped around his leg. The impact from the fall also caused several other injuries. Among them were Rob’s arms, shoulders and neck and led Rob to have multiple surgeries, countless visits to specialists, physical therapists and more. While in Alaska, Rob became an amateur nature photographer. He has taken hundreds of unique and fascinating photographs. One of them was used as the cover picture for his book, "Cruising Toward Heaven: Navigating from Rough Seas to Miraculous Adventures." Rob’s upcoming plans include creating a book using many of his other Alaskan pictures. In addition, from his experiences and the variety of interesting people he met, Rob created several Alaskan Reality TV concepts. Two brilliant screenwriters are currently developing a faith-based film script which is inspired by Rob’s previous book: "Is It God or Coincidence? Coming to Grips with the Unexpected Wonders in Life." You can learn more about Rob Ekno on his website at www.RobEkno.com.
