Writer, editor, and poet Rebecca McCarthy has written for the New York Times, Fast Company, the Bitter Southerner, and the American Scholar, among other publications, and has contributed chapters to books Small Cities and Counties and Speaking for Ourselves. She was an award-winning reporter with the Atlanta Journal Constitution and also worked for newspapers in Florida, South Carolina and Connecticut. In addition, she was a local editor for AOL/Patch Media. She has written about solitary bees, earthquake detection, an astronomy-oriented community, mental health services, hospital discharge guidelines, a butt-kicking machine, and historic trees. She favors the Oxford comma. She has won national and state awards for Florida, South Carolina, Connecticut, and Georgia newspapers. Rebecca holds a BA in English Language and Literature from the University of Chicago. She worked for the US Forest Service in Region 1, fighting forest fires and marking timber.
