Educated in Scotland, New Zealand and Canada, Gregor Reid is a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Western University in London, Ontario. He has published over 600 papers, mostly on probiotic bacteria, given over 600 talks in 54 countries and received national and international awards for his research. He chaired the United Nations/World Health Organization Expert Panel that defined probiotics in 2001 and has developed a probiotic to help women suffering for vaginal and urinary infections. He also helped establish a means for populations in African countries to produce their own affordable, health-promoting fermented foods. In addition to studies on allergy, cardiovascular and chronic kidney disease, he initiated a means to promote the health of honeybees exposed to pesticides and colony collapse. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
