Philippa Langley is an historian and award-winning producer. She first took the world by storm when she discovered the grave of King Richard III (1452-1485) in a Leicester car park. The discovery and reburial of Richard III was watched by an estimated global audience of over 366 million. Her first book, the bestselling, The Lost King: The Search for Richard III (first published as The King’s Grave, John Murray, UK; St Martin’s Press, USA, 2013) was co-authored with military historian Michael Jones. She has also co-authored Finding Richard III: The Official Account of Research by the Retrieval and Reburial Project (2014).
Langley’s 90-minute documentary, The King in the Car Park, about the search for King Richard, made with Channel Four and Darlow Smithson Productions, became the channel’s highest rated specialist factual show in its thirty-year history. Based on her original ‘Looking For Richard Project’, it won the 2013 Royal Television Society Award for Best History Programme and was nominated for a 2014 BAFTA.
Philippa Langley’s extraordinary story has been made into a major feature film by the award-winning team behind the 2013 hit, Philomena. The Lost King (Baby Cow Productions, BBC Films, Pathé) was directed by Sir Stephen Frears (The Queen) and starred Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water) playing her. The Lost King went on acclaimed international release in 2022, the ten-year anniversary of her discovery of the king.
In November 2023, Philippa once again rewrote the history books in her new work: The Princes in the Tower: Solving History’s Greatest Cold Case (The History Press, UK; Pegasus, USA). Based on her remarkable new research initiative The Missing Princes Project its now seven-year investigation revealed the Princes survived to challenge Henry VII, the first Tudor monarch, for the throne of England. It has been made into a feature-length Factual Special TV documentary by Channel 4, PBS in America and SBS in Australia.
In 2015 Philippa Langley was made an MBE by H.M. The Queen at Buckingham Palace.
She lives in Edinburgh.
She has two websites at: Philippa Langley and revealingrichardiii.
