Phil Vecchione grew up in Putnam County, NY. He has always had the writing bug, making up comic strips in elementary school, editing his middle school newspaper, and taking several creative writing classes in high school. In elementary school he discovered his main passion, tabletop roleplyaing games, through Dungeons & Dragons. Phil attended Brockport State college and earned a Bachelor’s in Biology in 1994, and then went on to pursue a Ph.D. in Biochemical Pharmacology at the University of Buffalo. As a Ph.D. candidate working on his thesis, Phil decided to change careers focusing on Information Technology for clinical research. Over the years, he has continued to work in the IT/IS field, with his career morphing from data analyst, to programmer, to project manager. Through all this, his passion for tabletop roleplaying never waned. In 2008, Phil was able to combine his passion for tabletop RPGs with his love of writing when he started blogging, co-founding Gnome Stew - The Game Mastering Blog (www.gnomestew.com). As a member of Gnome Stew he has written articles on all facets of Game Mastering including, but not limited to, session prep, campaign management, game designer interviews, and game reviews. Gnome Stew has won the Silver ENnie for Best Blog in 2010 and 2011 and the Gold ENnie in 2012. In 2010, Phil along with the other writers of Gnome Stew wrote their first book, Eureka: 501 Adventure Plots to Inspire Game Masters published by Engine Publishing. In 2011, they wrote their second book, Masks: 1,000 Memorable NPCs for Any Roleplaying Game. Masks went on to win the 2012 Gold ENnie for Best Aid/Accessory. In 2012, Phil released his first solo book, Never Unprepared: The Complete Game Master's Guide to Session Prep which was nominated for the 2012 Golden Geek award and is a Gold Seller on DriveThruRPG. Eureka, Masks, and Never Unprepared were recently licensed by Lone Wolf for use in their upcoming RealmWorks software. This year, Phil has teamed up with fellow Gnome Stew writer Walt Ciechanowski to write Odyssey: The Complete Game Master's Guide to Campaign Management, due out in the summer of 2013. Phil has been a regular attendee at Gen Con since its move to Indianapolis, and he has presented at workshops and seminars since 2004 on such Game Mastering topics as metagaming, GM advice, and gaming as you get older. Today, Phil lives in Buffalo NY, where he is an IT Project Manager for the State University of New York. He continues to be an avid role player. He is the faculty advisor for the Buffalo State Campus Roleplaying Anime Gaming Group (CRAGG), helping to promote gaming in all forms on campus. In 2012 he was a VIP guest at Queen City Conquest, Buffalo's annual regional gaming convention. He is the husband of an extremely supportive wife and the father of two wonderful children.
