Peter Tate qualified as a doctor at Newcastle in 1968, age 21. After spells as a P&O Surgeon and as a trainee in Kentish Town he was a family doctor for 30 years. He retired as Chief examiner of the MRCGP examination in 2006. He is the joint author of The Doctor's Communication Handbook, with co author Dr Francesca Frame, now in its eighth edition. He is also the author of The Other Side of Medicine, a collection of essays and short stories. Peter has written a novel, SeaSickness, an autobiographical, sad and funny, account of life as a young ship's doctor. Recently updated and republished in March 2017. Bedside Matters, a journey in Doctor Patient Communication has just been published (Nov 20). This is an intense, sometimes humorous and academic review of Peter's career long fascination with this topic. This is a must read for young doctors and all those involved in caring for patients. With Keith Baxby he has just published (Jan 21) a collection of medical anecdotes from his medical school colleagues who qualified in 1968 at Newcastle. 68 Remembers: Newcastle graduates medical memories. He has published a children's ghost story, The Curatage Ghost, based on the house he lived in till recently, in Corfe Castle, Dorset. There is now a second children's story called Poundbury and the little people. (Feb 2023) He was a co author of The Consultation and The New Consultation published by OUP. Five years ago he wrote and presented three DVDs to help improve doctor patient communication: Effective Consulting: The Five Key Tasks, Effective Consulting: Interpersonal Tasks for the CSA and Effective Consulting: Developing an Efficient Consulting Style. He has lectured widely on communication issues. Peter was awarded the MBE in 2008. In the USA he was jointly awarded, with David Pendleton, Theo Schofield and Peter Havelock, the prestigious 2011 Lynn Payer Award for outstanding contributions to the literature on the theory, practice and teaching of effective healthcare communication and related skills.
