Peter Sylvan is a Research Scientist at a small Western US university. In an earlier life, he was a naval officer serving aboard a US navy amphibious ship. And before that, he worked as a cowboy, wrangler and hunting guide in the Rocky Mountains. Having spent time disconnected and in remote locations before the advent of the internet age, he has felt the sense of separation of time and distance that is rare in younger people today. Consequently, he tries to instill a sense of go-it-alone toughness and self-sufficiency in his characters. His interests include economics and the history of agriculture and global trade, as well as archaeology and military history. He has traveled extensively in the US, the Caribbean, Europe and Australia. He particularly enjoys scuba diving because like one of his favorite Sci-fi authors Arthur C. Clarke said, it is as close to being on an alien planet as he is likely to get. He lives with his Labrador retriever who understands French.
