In 1942 Paul Henry Brown was born in Arizona on a Navaho Indian reservation where his father worked as a doctor before they moved as missionaries to the Belgian Congo. Living there among the needy Zande people his father, a skilled surgeon, set up a one-doctor hospital. Though they offered healing, his parents had a far greater message sharing the good news of John 3:16 with patients before and during surgery. His mom was a nurse who worked with her husband and trained national nurses for their general practice. Most of Paul’s early memories are filled with his experiences in Africa; at home in Zandeland and 550 miles away at the boarding school, Rethy Academy, which he attended first through tenth grade. After graduation from Wheaton College, Paul returned to Africa to become the headmaster of Gatumaiyu High School in Kenya. Two years later he came back to the States to marry his fiancée, Ellen Bearce and in 1968 the couple went to Rethy Academy to begin their years of service in the Democratic Republic of Congo. For over 30 years Pa and Ma Brown, as they are still affectionately known, taught, loved, and guided children in the very same boarding school where these stories took place. Paul and Ellen now live on a small farm in Central New York where Grandpa tries farming. They serve in the local church and are seeking to use the gifts and heritage God has given them to show God’s love to those He has prepared. The gift God offers is without measure, and cannot be earned yet leads to a relationship with Him that lasts forever. Paul Brown passes on this rich heritage to his growing grandchildren through his actions, words, and stories, some of which are written in the little book, Grandpa Still Remembers.
