I am the author of the 1987 version of ‘The Whitby Ghost Book’, which has a blue and white original drawing on its cover showing an affable looking ghost on the front. I wrote this little gem under my previous name, Paul McDermott (my married name is now Paul Fitz-George). This book's genesis occurred when I was The Collector of Dues for Whitby Harbour in the 1980’s, when I ran a ghost walk in the evenings to supplement my modest government income. The owner of Anderson Publications came on my walk one night and apparently liked it so much that he asked me to write it in book form which he published 1987. This original version was in my humble and totally biased opinion, a good read and had some great black and white illustrations inside by the artist and historian Helen Walasek. Alas, Mr Anderson eventually took his well-earned retirement many moons ago and the book went out of print. Fortunately, it has been reborn, as you can now get the new and updated version of ‘The Whitby Ghost Book’ on Amazon books, containing lots of original photographs taken by 'yours truly'. It has a great cover picture showing a Goth girl in the graveyard and has been well received. It is available in eBook and paperback and best of all, it's been released as an audio book narrated by that very fine actor Time Winters. Time has appeared in such TV dramas as Star Trek the Next generation and Columbo, to name but a few. He gives Whitby's ghost stories a real 'Vincent Price' feel, with his haunting voice and wonderful characterisations. You can listen to a free track of one of the stories on the Amazon and Audible sales pages. Time has also narrated 'The West End Ghost Book', a book full of the ghost stories from London's famous West End theatre area and it too is available in eBook and paperback format. As I said above, I'm now known as Paul Fitz-George, which is my wife's surname, which I took when we married, though Amazon has deemed that I retain the name McDermott for this author’s page. Under my new surname I have published other books in eBook and paperback format, including 'Christmas Customs of Old Whitby’, which is now a great audio book. It is narrated by the crystal-clear voiced Petrina Kingham. She has also narrated my latest work on the Victorian authors who visited and were inspired by Whitby, 'When Dracula Met the Jabberwocky'. For those of you with more of a leaning towards factual history, I have just released my first history book offering, this being 'Whitby: From the Celts to the Steampunks' and it is now available in Kindle, paperback and Audible editions. It has plenty of fascinating details on the town's famous personages over the centuries, from saintly Saxon saints and conquering Norman lords, to today's startling Steampunks with their great fashions and love of life. It also has some original photographs I have taken over the years to illustrate its chapters. I have recently added my first photography and travel book, 'The Serenity of Solway'. It's the culmination of ten years photography at the Solway Firth estuary in Dumfries and Galloway, which lies in the Border Country between England and Scotland and includes shots taken in its surrounding countryside. It compliments my presence on iStock ESP, where much of my global photographic work is presented and is a thoughtful trip in this beautiful area, with literary snippets added to amuse and interest the book's reader. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed talking the pictures the book contains. Short Videos Depicting the Books' Contents Do check out the four short videos available that have a visual synopsis of my books contents and that should hopefully whet your appetite for them. Just click on any one of the video panels to reveal their stories. I do hope you enjoy reading the stories I have written about in my books, as much as I've enjoyed researching and writing them.
