Paul D. Brinkman was born in Chicago and worked for many years in the Geology Department at The Field Museum. There he dabbled in paleontology by day and cultivated a deep-seated interest in history of science by night and on weekends. His academic background is in the humanities: he graduated from Augustana College with a BA in history, and later completed his PhD in history of science at the University of Minnesota. His research interest is in the history of nineteenth century natural sciences, especially geology and paleontology. He has published two books and a number of articles on Charles Darwin, on museum history, and especially on the history of American vertebrate paleontology. He works as a research curator at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, in Raleigh, NC.
