I’m a theoretical physicist at the Joint Institute for Quantum Information and Computer Science in Maryland. Although originally from Florida, I attended Dartmouth College in the Middle of Nowhere, New Hampshire. My major combined physics, math, history, and philosophy. During a gap year, I worked as a physics research assistant in England, where I explored centuries-old castles, little villages, and local literature. I then earned a Masters at the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Canada. (Canada was warmer than the Middle of Nowhere, New Hampshire.) My PhD work took place at Caltech in Pasadena, California (which was far warmer than the Middle of Nowhere, New Hampshire). I developed a research program by smashing together quantum physics, information theory, and thermodynamics. Upon graduating, I traded Pasadena’s sunshine for the rain and red brick of Harvard, where I performed research as an ITAMP Postdoctoral Fellow. I followed the red brick to Maryland, where I lead a physics research group. Follow me on Twitter @nicoleyh11 and on Quantum Frontiers, where I blog once a month.
