Michael D. Hattem is a historian specializing in the American Revolution and historical memory. He earned his PhD in History from Yale University and has taught at Knox College and Lang College at The New School. He is the author of several books, including "The Memory of ’76: The Revolution in American History" (2024), which was a finalist for the 2025 George Washington Prize. His work has been featured or mentioned in The New York Times, TIME magazine, The Smithsonian Magazine, the Washington Post, as well as many other mainstream media publications and outlets. His research has been supported financially by fellowships from the American Philosophical Society, New-York Historical Society, Mount Vernon, Massachusetts Historical Society, and other institutions. He has also consulted on many public history projects, appeared in a television documentary, curated a rare books exhibition, and identified, authenticated, and written catalogue essays for rare historical documents sold at auction.
