"The Nearly Calamitous Taming of PZ" was inspired by Ms. Ritter's own foxhound, Tess, who, like the foxhound in the book, was a laboratory dog who entered civilization. Tess was three years old when Ms. Ritter adopted her. The dog knew nothing about the world outside the laboratory. She didn't even know that there was a world. Experts said Tess was the most damaged dog they had ever seen. Most of them predicted that she would never connect with a human. Well, they were wrong! Tess transformed over the decade she spent out in the world. The book conveys in fiction the many influences large and small that helped this haunted dog become kind, gracious, and brave. She even developed a sense of humor. But that's for another book! Ms. Ritter is a journalist, speechwriter, poet, and actor. She has shared her sense of humor with a national audience in a number of classic TV commercials.
