Madelyn Rohrer refers to herself as a "border kid." Born in Rochester NY, she spent many of her growing up years living on both sides of the U.S./Canadian border. A few years later her family moved to El Centro CA, just a few miles from the Mexican border. In between borders, she lived in Jonesborough TN (the home of storytelling international) for 25 years before returning to Upstate New York. She is a 15-year veteran professional storyteller who shares her stories from the stage as well as in written form. Her stories are historical, historical fiction, Christian, spiritual, children's, patriotic, "old car," and those of good moral value...although some are simply products of pure imagination, she adds with a smile! Many of her short stories have been chosen for inclusion in writers guild anthologies. Madelyn was a contributing writer for the Positive Points column of the Jonesborough Herald & Tribune for many years plus a freelance writer of marketing packages within the Ballad Health medical organization. She is a recipient of the Ann S. Eady international newsletter award of the Antique Automobile Club of America as well as being the first female president of two AACA regions. She is a an avid historian, teacher, public speaker, and a workshop presenter for churches, businesses, and storytelling and writers' groups. "Tiggy Tiggy Touch Wood" and "Touched by Tennessee" are collections of short stories originally told on stage, available in soft cover and Kindle formats. "Touched by Tennessee" was released as an audio book in June 2020,with Madelyn doing her own narration. Included are musical pieces by the Jonesborough United Methodist Church Choir and musicians plus unique sounds added by the recording agent, Blue River Studio LLC in Elizabethton TN. Many stories from these books have been chosen for anthologies and have won awards from Storytelling World, a publication of the National Storytelling Network. "Shoes in the River" was intended as a stand-alone short story having to do with the 1980-2015 one-child-per-family edict of China, but the subject proved to be too extensive and complex for a short story. It became a full-length novel with a sequel ("Children of the Edict") scheduled for release in July 2023. While the characters of both books are fictional, the events, timelines and emotions are real to life. "The Ugly Popcorn Tree" is a novella about orphans...specifically older orphans who linger in orphanages and some of the reasons they would be there at an older age. Again, the characters are fictional but the situations are real. It also brings to the forefront some of the history about the orphan trains. (Orphan trains were discontinued in 1928.) "Hobie the Christmas Spider" is the first in a series of handsomely-illustrated, hard cover children's books called "The Critter Series." It was recently made available in a soft cover edition as well. "Bert the Owl Bat," Book 2 of the series, is also available in hard-cover and soft cover. As a special gift to children during the covid years to keep them entertained, both children's books are complimentary in their entirety on YouTube with Madelyn doing the narration. Music and sound effects are added by Blue River Studio LLC in Elizabethton TN. Search on YouTube.com for: Stories by Madelyn Rohrer. There is a collectible glass ornament available for each of the two critter characters, Hobie and Bert. They are $19.95 each (or 2 for $35) which includes free shipping within the Continental U.S. They are produced by Blue River Studio LLC. You can order them through Madelyn's web site: www.storytellermadelynrohrer.com. Books 3 and 4 of The Critter Series ("There's a Ferret in the Neighborhood" and "Eirennie the Dove of Peace") are being illustrated and planned for late 2023 or early 2024 release. "There's a Ferret in the Neighborhood" is about an adorable but mischievous ferret. "Eirene the Dove of Peace" is the story of Noah's Ark, but from the perspective of the dove. "Johnny Come Back" is an additional novella on her bookshelf. It is a true story as told to her by two people who lived through an 84-day life-threatening experience starting at Christmas in 2018. Madelyn was so impressed by their story that she volunteered to write it for them. Although it is extremely medical in nature, all of the medical terms are explained throughout the book and again in a glossary in the back of the book. It is an amazing story of perseverance and balancing medical knowledge with religious beliefs. It is available on line.
