Lyn G. Brakeman has been an Episcopal priest for almost 30 years now. No one has ever called her "Mother." "My four children hold exclusive rights to that title," she gently says. Lyn is the author of Spiritual Lemons: Biblical Women, Irreverent Laughter and Righteous Rage, midrash stories that give women, who might remain anonymous or silent, voice. They have wonderful conversations with God who listens and often blesses what the world condemns—little things like anger and boldness. Lyn's second book, The God Between Us: A Spirituality of Relationships, is also midrash stories but about relationships in the Bible. Lyn's memoir, God Is Not A Boy's Name:Becoming Woman, Becoming Priest (Cascade Books, 2016) tells the story of her spirituality, her deep connection to the voice of God within, and how much grit and grace it took for her to fight to be ordained priest in the patriarchal church at a time when attitudes were, well, about the same as they are today—a little cool and stiff. The book also makes a strong case about the nature of divinity, traditionally garbed in exclusively masculine language and imagery. No one would say God has a gender. But really, how would one know? This linguistic and theological transformation to liberate God from tiny English pronouns— like He, His, Him, Himself —may be traumatic to the wee words, but honestly it won't hurt much. Besides, we have wonderful treatments for PTSD these days. It is time to make our religious language serve our theology. It is time to create a just and loving language for both humanity and divinity. Lyn blogs weekly at www.spirituallemons.blogspot.com.
