I have been writing fiction since I was a kid. I can remember sitting at the dining room table when I was still in single digits and trying to get spelling tips from my parents for a story about our pet poodle; they sent me to go get the dictionary instead. I took an extra course in high school focused on creative writing with the goal of publishing short fiction in a magazine. That goal was not met, but I enjoyed the focus on plotting and crafting stories for an hour every weekday. I first used the pseudonym Mary Jane when I was a freshman at Harvey Mudd College and started writing a weekly column for the student paper, The Muddraker. Being a shy, reserved youth, I felt I would be more forthright using a pseudonym. Since 80% of the students were male, a woman's name garnered more attention. And, the name Mary Jane seemed nicely disreputable. I initially published novels using this pseudonym, but I feared that readers might shun me just because of the name (figuring I was just writing about drugs). So, I retired my pseudonym in 2017 and rebranded my early novels using my real name, Kyle G. Roesler. I have self-published multiple novels (more all the time) and one collection of short stories. I call myself, "The greatest living American writer no one has ever heard of," thinking that's a clever disparaging nickname. I admit I may be wrong about the clever part. Fun facts about my now dearly-departed pseudonym, Mary Jane: 1) When Mary plays guitar, he uses an amp that goes to 12. His wa-wa pedal, however, goes to 13. 2) Mary is also a sit-down comedian (why stand when you can sit?); check out a couple of his routines on YouTube. 3) Mary has made a short film of one scene of his novel, “Saba,” and plans to make more short films in the future. 4) Mary and Kirsten Dunst get together occasionally to discuss Peter Parker. Emma Stone is not invited. 5) Mary is really a man who is 6'6" tall. He can't walk in heels worth a darn. 6) When Arnold Palmer and Mary get together, they discuss how to discretely order items named after them (half lemonade/half iced tea and taffy candy, respectively). 7) Wait, what did you think I was talking about in that previous item? 8) Mary really appreciates any reader who reads this biography so thoroughly they make it to item #8. Note: half of these fun facts are actually facts. I will leave it as an exercise for the reader to sort out facts from fiction.
