Karen Liebreich, best known for The Letter in the Bottle, is an author, historian, gardener and film-maker. Studied history at UCL, the European University Institute in Florence and Cambridge University. While researching for her doctorate she discovered documents that resulted in the paedophile priest exposé, Fallen Order. She worked as the cultural assistant for the French Institute in London, then worked for the BBC, making TV documentaries on European historical themes including prize-winning documentaries on Nazis, silent cinema and the Royal Navy for the BBC and then for the History Channel. When her children were very young she founded (and subsequently sold) a successful business, the Baby Directory. Between 2005-2009 she ran a community garden, which led her to write The Family Kitchen Garden, which has become a bestselling classic in Germany. When a friend found an unsigned bottle on the beach with a beautiful letter inside, she wrote The Letter in the Bottle. She was awarded an MBE in 2013.
