Johanna Neuman is a writer, historian and now an author of historical fiction. A former journalist, she covered the White House, Congress and the State Department for USA Today and the Los Angeles Times' Washington Bureau before earning her PhD in history at American University.. In all her books, she chronicles the personal costs of political change. Her first book as a historian, Gilded Suffragists: The New York Socialites Who Fought for Women's Right to Vote, tells the story of more than two hundred New York social figures who joined the women’s suffrage movement in the 1910s. Chronicled by a vibrant newspaper industry for their extravagant lifestyles, they became the media darlings of their day. And when these glamorous socialites embraced the campaign, they electrified public interest. Like Oprah Winfrey endorsing any cause today, they created buzz around the idea that women deserved to vote. Her new book, The Concert, is a historical novel, set in WW2 and based on a true story, about a group of musicians who band together — amid the starvation and deprivation of Hitler’s Siege of Leningrad — to perform a magical concert that lifts the city to victory. The story is told through the eyes of Olga Berggolts, a broadcaster at Radio Leningrad, whose musings about the twin evils of Hitler's fascism and Stalin's communism thread the book with political insight.
