My home is on top of a mountain in beautiful Plumas County. I live among a rush of creeks that spill through my town, from the headwaters that provide seventy percent of the water to California. I live with my son, grandson, one sweet dog, and two very sassy cats. Finally retired, my plan is to live and write on my mountaintop until I die. My son and daughter have promised to toss my ashes into a swift creek during the spring thaw. I became obsessed with cults and their leaders over a decade ago, when I read an article on the systematic abuse that occurs within any successful cult. It was so familiar. I recognized the dilemma of the victims in my body and its bones. I had experienced the mind control techniques the sociopaths use to rule their cult milieu. I was reading about my own childhood under the reign of my stepfather. My fundamental familiarity with the emotional trauma imposed in a cult setting stunned me. After that, I read every book I could find on the subject as a way to understand and honor myself for the abuse I'd endured with all its emotional aftermath. This obsession launched the Deceivers Series, so I could craft my alter ego, Sophie Bayard, who fights for the free soul of each and every exiting cult member who comes to her for help. My hope is that Sophie will free me. As the series plays out, my goal is to mirror her bravery in my own life, to call out all the false prophets, the sociopaths who lie and seduce and then abuse the free will of good people. I am currently plotting the second book in the Deceivers Series, "Dancing with the Devil in the Church of Satan." Celeste Jones floods Sophie's inbox with emails. Her brother Comet's involvement with Satan's Temple doesn't alarm their New Age parents who approve its teachings, that we are not meant to be servants of God, that we must embrace our own divinity. But Celeste has been inside the Temple at her brother's insistence, locked in the cheesy, basement labyrinth with a handful of infatuated followers. When the young, charismatic Dragon orders Comet to have sex with Celeste on the ceremonial stone, she realizes her brother intends to obey the command and embraces her divinity. Celeste tells Dragon to shove it and flees. She is safe, but she believes her brother has lost his soul to the dark heart of the labyrinth. She begs Sophie to intervene. The characters in FATAL PROPHECY and all books to follow in the Deceivers Series are fictitious. But the dilemma they face is real for millions of people today, people trapped in destructive cults or cult-like relationships.
