Javier DeFelipe received his Ph.D. from the Universidad Complutense, in Madrid, Spain. He is currently a Research Professor at the Instituto Cajal (CSIC), Madrid, Spain and has worked at the Institute since 1977. His main area of expertise lies in the microanatomy of the cerebral cortex. Another of his principal interests is the study of the history of our current understanding of important aspects of cortical organization and function, particularly the origins and roots of cortical histology and circuitry. Prof. DeFelipe is also fascinated by the link between the study of the brain and art and has been involved in organizing and curating numerous exhibitions around the world. He has written several articles, chapters, and books on both this subject and the influence of Santiago Ramón y Cajal in modern neuroscience.
