James Hockings (1947-2013) was a master portrait and artistic photographer in London, Ontario for over three decades. A 2010 graduate of the highly regarded Creative Writing program and Humber College, Toronto, he announced his career as a writer in 2011 with "The Redemption of Danny Harper," a 1960's novel of a boy coming of age in a time of chaos. "Redemption" was soon followed, the same year, by the dark comedic novel "How to Kill Your Wife" plus two titles in a Max and Molly Murder Mystery Series. Hockings’ short but prolific writing career also produced two books on photography, "How to Photograph Children" (2011) and "Photographing Feelings" (2012). James Hockings died of bladder cancer in February 2013. A two-location retrospective of photographic work was exhibited at his alma mater, Luther College, Iowa, in September 2013. A book, "Zen Slaps from a Cancer Warrior: A Pissant's Perspective," a real-time chronology of essays and email correspondence, will be launched in September 2017 in London, Ontario. Hockings felt mentored by the works of Carl Jung the psychoanalyst, Edward Weston the photographer and Miles Davis the jazz musician. Susan Swan, an acclaimed Canadian novelist and public intellectual, who mentored Hockings most directly, praised his originality. Hockings was a photographer for over three decades. He was tagged as a "a national treasure" by the curator of the Canadian Theatre Archive for his work in recording over 1000 stage productions. His two little how-to photo books, also published by Amazon, are fun to read and share practical advice for amateur photo enthusiasts that want to learn how to photograph rather than "just take pictures." His hobbies included drinking exceptional beer in modest quantities; reading trash detective novels, bow hunting big game, and projecting movies from DVD's. He never owned a television set, but was a self-styled expert on topics such as hunting dogs, beer, jazz, and long distance running.
