Joyce Gardner Hurd, American writer, was born and raised in Massachusetts, the child of deaf adults (CODA). She and her brother took the responsibilities for their parents seriously. They spoke for them, advocated for them, helping them navigate a hearing world and at the same time respecting their independence and capabilities. After graduating from high school in Newburyport, she followed her boyfriend, Bruce, (later husband) to Boston. From there she gravitated to a marketing career through several different agencies and ended her career as a senior vice president at Hill Holliday. After retiring in 2016, she and Bruce traveled, gardened and raised several Maine Coon cats. With Bruce's encouragement, Joyce returned to finish her bachelor's degree in creative writing at Southern New Hampshire University. Long desiring to write a novel, Joyce started her first book in 2019 just as Bruce was diagnosed with throat cancer. Between appointments and treatments, Joyce continued to work on her book and finished it shortly before Bruce died. She is currently living in New Hampshire, and working on her second novel with the help of her cat, Kiki, who enjoys sitting on the keyboard and begging for treats.
