Growing up, I was always mesmerized by new technology. But it was not until I became a PhD student that I began to question the relationship between new technology and the way we work, interact, and live. Who benefits (and loses) from the way technologies are designed and implemented? What impact do these technologies have on societal outcomes, especially inequality? These questions are at the heart of my first book, “Inside the Invisible Cage: How Algorithms Control Workers.” In this book, I examine how a digital platform for high-skilled workers used opaque algorithms to control worker experiences. My findings have implications for how we can ensure the "future of work" is more equitable—especially given the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. I am currently an Associate Professor of Management and Organizations and Sociology (by courtesy) at Northwestern University. My work has been covered in The Washington Post, Wired, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Fortune, Forbes, and more.
