What was the 16-year-old blood-sucking vampire cult leader thinking when he bludgeoned the parents of one of his followers in a frenzied, unprovoked attack? Why did two teenagers attack a young widow and kill her two young daughters when all they initially wanted was her car? And what possessed a beautiful, married, middle-school teacher to throw caution – and all of her clothing – to the wind so she could have sex with one of her male students? As a 40-year veteran newspaper reporter and editor, I’m not satisfied to learn just the facts. I want to know what people are thinking and what drives them to do the things they do. That's why I wrote "Unbroken: The Dorothy Lewis Story"; "Vampires, Gators and Wackos, A Newspaperman's Life"; and my latest book, "Cold Blooded, A True Crime Story of a Murderous Teenage Vampire Cult." Journalism is filled with zany characters reporting on zany characters. Like other “inmates,” I am addicted to flashing blue cop-car lights, bad coffee and deadlines that would stress out a slug in a coma. Add a mixture of lying politicians, celebrities and certifiable lunatics, and you have a formula for a crazy life. Florida is filled with people who say, “We don’t do it that way back home.” No wonder. Where else can you find alligators swimming in your pool, sinkholes swallowing your house and hurricanes uprooting everything but concrete slabs. "Cold Blooded" gave me a chance to write about the horrific murder case I have covered for more than 20 years. It exposes secrets of occult worship, wildly dysfunctional families, illicit sex, spiritual warfare and fierce legal battles. I still do freelance work for the Daily Commercial newspaper in Central Florida, and why not? Things still go bump in the night. I like to speak to various groups when I'm not writing. I have a master’s degree in journalism from the University of Georgia, which makes me a lonely man during the annual Georgia-Florida football game. I also have a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of North Florida. My wife Jackie and I have three daughters and seven grandchildren.
