Franco Barchiesi (b. 1968) was born in Senigallia (Italy). From 1994 to 2002 he lived in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he was a lecturer in the Department of Sociology at the University of the Witwatersrand and a research associate in the Sociology of Work Unit. He was also a founding editor of the magazine "Debate: Voices from the South African Left" (1996-2004). Franco received his PhD in Sociology from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2006. From 2002 to 2005 he has taught in the Department of Politics at the University of Bologna (Italy) and since 2005 he has been with the Department of African American and African Studies at the Ohio State University, where he is now Associate Professor. Franco is the author of "Precarious Liberation: Workers, the State, and Contested Social Citizenship in Postapartheid South Africa" (Albany: State University of New York Press and Pietermaritzburg: University of KwaZulu-Natal Press, 2011) and the editor, with Tom Bramble, of "Rethinking the Labour Movement in the 'New South Africa'" (London: Ashgate, 2003). Franco's articles have appeared in, among others, "African Studies Review", "Journal of Southern African Studies", "Journal of Asian and African Studies", "Urban Forum", "International Labor and Working Class History", "Review. Fernand Braudel Center", "Historical Materialism", "Antipode", "Rethinking Marxism", "Review of African Political Economy", "Critical Sociology", "Monthly Review", and "Labour, Capital and Society".
