Fiona Spargo-Mabbs has worked with parents and families for more than two decades. Having studied English at Oxford University, Fiona qualified as a teacher and began teaching English in adult education, with her first love and specialism being Family Learning. This involved working with parents and carers in more vulnerable families to build parent-child connectedness and communication. Over the years, Fiona took on increasingly high-level responsibilities strategically at a national level within this specialism. Then in 2014, her younger son Dan, then sixteen, suddenly and unexpectedly died, having taken MDMA (ecstasy). Fiona and her husband Tim were determined to do all they could to prevent any harm happening to anyone else’s child from drugs, and in response founded a drug education charity in Dan’s name, the Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation. Over the years Fiona has worked with tens of thousands of young people, parents, carers and professionals far and wide, and she is now considered to be one of the leading UK experts in drug education. As well as regularly being asked to talk to the media, she speaks across a range of platforms, informing and influencing policy and practice at a national level. In 2023 she was awarded an OBE for services to young people.
