A native of the Ohio Valley, Dorothy fulfilled her dream of moving to New York City in 1970 and stayed there for fifty years. She has played classical piano since the age of six and received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music and music education. In New York, Dorothy became a regular singer/pianist in small clubs and cocktail lounge settings. As a happy amateur seeking to grow her musical chops, she studied alongside her future husband, Mike Longo, and Alexander Alexay, a professional classical pianist who accompanied opera singers such as Marian Anderson, Jerome Hines, Jan Pierce, Robert Merrill, Mario Lanza, Joan Sutherland, and more. While music is her first passion, Dorothy trained and worked as one of the first Physicians Assistants in the country, a post she held for ten years. She has also served at the Bahá’í International Community’s United Nations Office for over thirty-one years (twenty-seven years as Operations Officer for the New York and Geneva offices). Dorothy served as friend and confidante to her husband, Mike Longo, for over thirty-two years, making herself his muse and greatest supporter as she offered her critique and perspective to his ever-evolving musical development. She had an integral role in supporting the artists that joined Consolidated Artists Productions and helped organize over sixteen years (2004–2020) of weekly Jazz Tuesdays events with Mike at the John Birks Gillespie Auditorium in NYC. Like Mike, Dorothy is an advocate for the oneness of humanity, having spent decades befriending and working alongside people from different countries, races, ethnicities, religions, and socio-economic backgrounds. Today, Dorothy continues to expand her musical repertoire by playing for friends, senior citizens, and her religious community. As a member of the extended jazz community, she also maintains strong personal relationships with musicians and their families, including many of Mike’s former colleagues, students, and band members. Together, they are committed to promoting the musical principles that the late Mike Longo learned from Dizzy, Oscar Peterson, and other jazz legends, making them available to as many musicians as possible.
