A Colorado native with Louisiana roots, Denise Young closed a two decade-plus career with Apple, Inc, serving as Vice President, Worldwide Human Resources, responsible for attracting and retaining the company’s top talent. As the first Black woman to serve at C-level in the company, Denise reported to Tim Cook, but served also, under Steve Jobs’ leadership, Denise sat on the executive team that designed and built Apple’s retail stores concept, taking the chain to over 400 stores globally before being promoted to CHRO. Prior to her time at Apple, Denise offered talent, HR and management consulting expertise to early-stage businesses including Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers portfolio companies. Denise has been named a “Most Powerful Woman” by Ebony and Black Enterprise magazines, named “ 100 Most Influential in Silicon Valley” by Business Insider, and has been featured in Fortune’s “Most Powerful Women” issue. A proud HBCU graduate of Grambling State University in Louisiana Denise earned a bachelor’s degree in Communications and a master’s degree in Organizational Management. Post Apple, Denise served 3 years as the Executive -in-Residence at Cornell Tech in NYC, advising young tech leaders on the importance of inclusivity and building humanity into technology, and as an advisor to various academic institutions, specifically Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Truly living at the intersection of technology, humanity and art, Denise is a performing and recording artist and released her recording, Soprano in 2018. Alongside composer John Adams, Denise was recently recognized with the Creative Catalyst Award by the American Composers Orchestra. She has served as Chair of the SFJAZZ Board of Trustees since June 2020.
