I live in South Yorkshire, part of the country that I love, and I grew up with stories. My mother was Irish and my father was Polish, born in what is now Belarus. My father came here to join the Polish Free Forces after the invasion of Poland in 1939. He kept his Polish childhood alive with stories from the turbulent times in which he grew up. My mother, being Irish, had her own collection of stories which she shared with us. For many years, I worked with young people in Yorkshire who were growing up in the aftermath of sudden industrial decline. I used this background in my earlier books. Becca and Kay, the two main characters in the East Riding series come from work I have done more recently with homeless young people. I lost my husband, Ken Reah, in 2019, shortly after I completed the second book in the East Riding series, Someone Who Isn't Me, which makes the book very special to me. As well as writing, I work as Chair of Examiners for one of the UK exam boards. I live with my elderly Jack Russell terrier, Doris, a lot of garden birds, a few urban foxes and recently, an urban badger.
