Chris Register is an explorer at heart. His life’s journey has taken him through a thousand villages, towns, cities, rural communities, and wild places spread across several continents. Chris’s travels have blended with his Peace Corps service and his policy studies at UNC-Wilmington and Georgetown Law to inform his appreciation for what’s at stake at home in the USA. That appreciation has in turn fueled Chris’s concern about the expanding rifts dividing our country. Several years spent litigating large civil cases in federal court while watching our national discourse crumble left him confronting a choice: ignore our creeping internal distrust in favor of more billable hours, or get out into America and try to help turn things around. Each new decibel in the cacophony of pundit voices brought Chris a step closer to the journey awaiting him. He finally swapped his mesh office chair for a stiff bicycle seat and a mission to connect with the people who make up the United States, knowing he would one day share these folks’ stories and perspectives with those seeking to better understand what it means to be American today. That 16,000-mile, 50-state endeavor became Conversations With US. Chris’s journey continues as he takes this modern American epic from pedal to print with his independent publishing company, Spoke & Word Books. He lives and writes in Charlottesville, Virginia.
