Written by Thiruvalluvar in Tamil 10,000 years ago, Thirukkural and its Pearls of Wisdom is as relevant today as it was when written. Hence, it is known as a book for all ages. The Thirukkural is a classic Tamil sangam literature consisting of 1,330 couplets or Kurals. The Tirukku is one of the most important works in the Tamil language. கல்கி' என்ற மூன்றெழுத்தினை அறியா தமிழர் இலர் எனலாம். சரித்திர நாவல் உலகிலும். நாவலுலகிலும், சிறுகதைகளிலும், கட்டுரை வளத்திலும், நகைச்சுவை உணர்விலும், கலை இலக்கிய உலகிலும் விரிந்த பார்வையுடன் வளம் வந்து தம் படைப்புப் பணியை தொடர்ந்தவர்.சிறுகதை உலகில் புதுமைப்பித்தன் தொடக்கி ஜெயகாந்தன் காலம் வரை அவர்களுக்கு இணையாக தம் படைப்புகளை தந்து நிமிர்ந்து நின்று அனைத்து தரப்பினராலும் பேசப்பட்டவர்; விமர்சிக்கப்பட்டவர்.

பாஷாணம் என்றாலே விஷம் என்றுதான் எல்லோரும் சொல்வார்கள். ஒரு பாஷாணத்தைத் தனியாகப் பயன்படுத்தும்போதுதான் அது விஷமாகிறது. அதை இன்னொரு பாஷாணத்துடன் சேர்த்துப் பயன்படுத்தும்போது அந்த விஷமே வேறுவிதமாக மாறி வினைபுரியத் தொடங்கிவிடுகிறது. அதிலும் ஒன்றுக்கு ஒன்பது பாஷாணங்கள் ஒன்றுபடும் போது அங்கே ஒன்பது கிரகங்களின் சக்தியே வந்துவிடுவதாக சித்தபுருஷர்கள் கண்டறிந்தார்கள்.’

On a rainy day, a rich young man picks up a hapless college girl in his car, seduces her and drops her in her street. On realising her daughter's plight, the girl's mother pours a bucketful of water on her head, saying that she has been purified by this act as if she had taken the test by fire. The mother asks her daughter to forget the incident and get on with life. The story challenged the dominant cultural norms of woman's chastity, and many culturally acceptable closures were suggested.
