Once a land of Pueblo dwellers, the town of San Geronimo Peak, New Mexico, is prime ski country. PI Howard Moon Deer and ex-cop Jack Wilder are headed there to meet their first client - a former US senator and the ski slope's owner. Instead, they find his body - and a murder case to solve.

Ben Pecos has the opportunity to work in Albuquerque on a research project for the Indian Health Service, and his fiancée Julie Conlin decides to join him when she snags an invitation for the couple to stay at the lavish home of an old family friend, Connie CdeBaca, who is the head of a family of successful land developers. But Connie harbors a deep secret she has never told anyone. Ben and Julie are hardly settled when people begin dying, and they find themselves swept into the midst of another mystery.

An evil force lurks in a national forest, taking the most innocent of people, while a killer uses superstition to cover his tracks. In a small New Mexico town, the death of a young hiker puts law officials on high alert after no cause of death could be determined. It isn't the first time strange things have occurred in their national forests and parks. The common denominator in a series of recent cases is the victim missing shoes and the body posed peacefully near the area that has already been searched.
