Story
The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 left death and destruction in its wake, but young Elsie Drummond survived. In this volume of the Young Texans Series, we return to 1900, a time without effective hurricane tracking technology or warning systems. Elsie Drummond is celebrating her 11th birthday with friends when the storm approaches. As the hurricane gathers intensity, Elsie's mother escorts the party guests home and instructs the young girl to prepare for the onslaught of the storm.

Story
Tiny has heard the stories that freedom is coming, but she is tired of waiting. Tiny Mason has nothing of her own. Even her last name belongs to her master. In June of 1865, the Texas slaves hear rumors that the war is over and they will soon be free. Tiny, impatient for freedom, sneaks away from the Mason Plantation in the back of a wagon bound for Galveston. In that port city, on June 19, Major General Granger reads the proclamation announcing the slaves are free.
