While there have been audiobooks in the space that have alluded to crowdfunding and prize competitions in their backdrops, none have unearthed such extensive underpinnings of the practices, or analyzed them in such detail as to provide insights into a rather underreported tool for societal progress.

Uriel Ventris, Captain der Ultramarines, ist in die Reihen der Primaris aufgestiegen. Seine neueste Mission führt ihn und einige Krieger der Vierten Kompanie fort von Roboute Guillimans Indomitus-Kreuzzug und zu einer Grenzwelt des Reiches Ultramar. Auf Sycorax ereignete sich einst eine Schlacht gegen die Orks, doch jetzt wird der Planet von einem Feind aus uralter Zeit angegriffen – den Necrons. Die Ultramarines haben schon zuvor gegen diese unheilvollen Xenos gekämpft, doch Uriel Ventris glaubt zu erkennen, dass ein alter Widersacher aus seiner eigenen Vergangenheit die Hand im Spiel hat.
