Today we take for granted the exploration of the fascinating submarine depths of the oceans, so ubiquitous are its many representations on our screens. It is therefore surprising to realise that in his thrilling 1869 novel Jules Verne was anticipating much which was then not even imagined by science. The enigmatic Captain Nemo takes his awe-inspiring Nautilus around the Oceans of the world exploring the deep with its wonders and horrors.

During his twilight years, the French author Jules Verne (1828-1905) wrote two original sequels to books that had fired his own youthful imagination but which he felt to be incomplete: Johann Wyss's Swiss Family Robinson and Edgar Allan Poe's The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. Visiting far-flung regions of the ocean, they see amazing coral formations, sunken vessels, the Antarctic ice barrier, the South Pole, the transatlantic telegraph cable, and Atlantis, the legendary underwater kingdom. In the underwater forests off Crespo Island, they hunt sharks, but when the submarine returns to the Atlantic Ocean, giant squid attacks them....

L'histoire commence en 1787. La frégate HMS Bounty, commandée par William Bligh, est affrétée par l'Amirauté Anglaise pour rallier Tahiti afin d'y récolter des plants d'arbre à pain. L'Amirauté prévoit d'acclimater cette plante dans les colonies anglaises des Indes Occidentales pour nourrir les esclaves. Le voyage est rendu difficile par le caractère exigeant du capitaine Bligh. Il punit sévèrement l'équipage et fait donner le fouet avec beaucoup trop de générosité au goût de ses hommes. L'escale tahitienne est donc bienvenue, et les six mois passés sur l'île à récolter les plants d'arbre à pain, seront pour ces hommes sévèrement tenus un avant-goût de paradis.
