These hill folk came to trade, yet some of these are killed and later, no disappearances occur before the time of the Sabbath.

"Beyond the Wall of Sleep" is a short story from 1919 based on the innovative (at that time) idea of using psychology for explaining real-life issues. "The Temple" is a short story written by H. P. Lovecraft in 1920, and first published in the pulp magazine "Weird Tales #24" in September 1925. The story is narrated as a "found manuscript" penned by Karl Heinrich, Graf von Altberg-Ehrenstein, a lieutenant-commander in the Imperial German Navy during the days of World War I. Altberg begins by declaring that he has decided to document the events leading up to his untimely end in order to "set certain facts" before the public, aware that he will not survive to do so himself.

The tale follows an unnamed narrator, an intern at a mental hospital, who becomes intrigued by a patient, Joe Slater, a troubled man from the backwoods of the Catskills. Slater’s violent outbursts and visions of a celestial battle suggest a connection to a higher, otherworldly plane. Using a fictional “etheric wave” device, the narrator attempts to link his consciousness with Slater’s, embarking on a journey into an ethereal world where thoughts and dreams take on cosmic significance.
