Er zijn woorden die zich niet laten terugnemen. Eenmaal uitgesproken zijn ze onverbiddelijk tot leven gewekt. Woorden kunnen levens verwoesten, mensen doen besluiten zonder elkaar verder te gaan. Ze kunnen de persoon die je bent in de ogen van je kinderen voorgoed doen veranderen. Ze kunnen zelfs je eigen moeder doen twijfelen of ze jou wel op de wereld had moeten zetten.' Op de dag van Laura's vierde verjaardag pleegt haar moeder, Maria, zelfmoord. Jaren later, als Laura volwassen is en in verwachting van haar eerste kind, wil ze weten waarom haar moeder dit deed.

Jaren later, wanneer ze volwassen is, krijgt Vera een burn-out.
