Firenze, marzo 1970. Al commissario Bordelli manca poco più di una settimana alla pensione, e ancora non riesce a immaginare come si sentirà. Si augura che in questi giorni non avvengano altri omicidi: non vuole rischiare di lasciarsi alle spalle un mistero non risolto, ma il destino gli ha riservato una spiacevole sorpresa, e si trova ad affrontare il suo caso forse più difficile. Lungo il greto di un fiumiciattolo del Chianti, in località Passo dei Pecorai, proprio a pochi chilometri da casa sua, viene scoperto il cadavere di una ragazza.

È la primavera del 1967. L'alluvione di novembre, con il suo strascico di tragedie e di detriti, sembra essersi placata e Firenze comincia di nuovo a respirare. Ma non il commissario Bordelli. Per lui non c'è pace dopo un fatto che gli è successo. Indagando sull'omicidio di un ragazzino, si è scontrato con i poteri occulti della massoneria ed è stato costretto alla resa con un "messaggio" molto chiaro: lo stupro di Eleonora, la giovane commessa con cui aveva appena intrecciato una relazione appassionata, e una lista con i nomi di tutte le persone a lui più care.

Florence, October 1966. The rain is never-ending. When a young boy vanishes on his way home from school the police fear the worst, and Inspector Bordelli begins an increasingly desperate investigation. Then the flood hits. During the night of 4th November the swollen River Arno, already lapping the arches of the Ponte Vecchio, breaks its banks and overwhelms the city. Streets become rushing torrents, the force of the water sweeping away cars and trees, doors, shutters and anything else in its wake.
